UNEXPECTED DEATH

A. H. Bates of Marion, Idaho, Suddenly Removed from this Sphere of Action

Editor Deseret News:

On the morning of the 24th the people of this place were overwhelmed with grief and sorrow over the announcement of a sudden death, during the night, of one of our most loved and respected citizens, Brother A. H. Bates.

The night previous he attended a singing practice in the meeting house, and was apparently in the enjoyment of good health. Some time after he had retired to rest he sat up in bed and complained to his wife of a slight pain and shortly laid down again, seemingly feeling much better. But imagine the feelings of Sister Bates on awakening to find that life was extinct, he having passed suddenly during the night without struggle. The cause of his death is supposed to be paralysis of the brain.

Brother Bates was born in Harris Grove, Pottawattomie County, Iowa, February 14th, 1851; moved to Marion in 1881 from Tooele City, Utah.

When the Marion Ward was organized he was chosen counselor to Bishop A. G. Smith, which office he has filled with honor and fidelity, having the love and respect of all within the circle of his acquaintance. A family of nine children with his wife is left to mom his departure.
