I'm in the process of changing hosts for this website so it may not be available for a time. I point you to my new effort with Bates Place that has much of the same information as this website - just go to BatesPlace.net.

Announcement

A new site is up and running for Henderson, New York, where the Cyrus Bates home is located (built by Cyrus Bates and his father, Oliver Bates) - hendersonny.com. The site was put together by Gary Rhodes who resides in the historic Oliver and Cyrus Bates home and has been quite helpful in researching the Bates history of the home and area (as well as doing much in the way of genealogy research for the Henderson area). He successfully got the home designated on the State and National Register of Historic Places. Be sure to check out the gift shop which includes a Bates Commemorative Plate that has a drawing of the home and property (from a later date). Proceeds from the gift shop are put back into the veterans memorial and historical research efforts.

A stone has been set for Oliver Bates and also John Pentingill in Carpenter Cemetery (Revolutionary War stones). This effort was also spearheaded by Gary Rhodes.

A special thanks to Gary Rhodes and his efforts!

A link to the Jared Pratt Family Association has been added under Other Lines. The site includes pictures of Sarah Marinda Bates (Daughter of Cyrus Bates and Lyda Harrington, sister of Ormus Ephraim Bates) and Orson Pratt's children as well as histories and other information.

Welcome! This site has been the home of the Lyman Lester and Sarah Edith (Lee) Bates Ancestry and Descendency and still is (it can be found intact by clicking on Lyman Lester Bates and Sarah Edith Lee in the menu to the left). However, to broaden interest and to give more Bates family branches a home, this site has been changed to be more inclusive of other Bates family branches namely the ancestry and descendants of Oliver Bates (b. 7 Aug 1763 in Shelburne Falls, Franklin, Massachusetts, m. Rebecca Hart 16 Sep 1782, d. 8 Jun 1828 in Henderson, Jefferson, New York).

I will not pretend to have all the information on Bates ancestry and what I do have may even be incorrect. I am always in the process of trying to confirm the accuracy of information and will try to provide sources when possible. Also, I do not have the time to put together a detailed history for all the many family tree branches and will not pretend I can do this all myself.

Please, I beg (really, I do!), if you have a web site put together for any lines that would fall under the scope of this site, please e-mail me and let me know. I will put a link on the left side of this main page or under one of the main Bates Lines listed. If you see an error anywhere, please correct me. If you have family history stories and/or histories for any localities these Bates and other allied lines lived, please e-mail me. Do you want to create a web site for your branch but don't have a place to put it or want a site without advertisements popping up everywhere and slowing down every page? E-mail me and we can see about putting your web site on BatesPlace.com, no charge whatsoever.

Family History is for sharing and that is what this site is all about. I want to share what I have and have found so others can enjoy learning about their heritage. Frankly, dates and place names are just a very minor part of what Family History/Genealogy is all about. What our ancestors experienced is what, in my opinion, Family History/Genealogy is really all about. The environment they lived in (cultural, political, religious and environmental) and the trials and triumphants they experienced is truly the history of our families.

This is, of course, a work in progress. So, keep watching for additions.
